Sprint Game is an Apple Watch app built for one thing: timed sprints over 500m or 1km. It guides the warm-up, runs the countdown, times the sprint, and keeps your three best times per distance. It runs on the watch, so your phone stays in your pocket or at home.
This is the basic version, with more to come once the app is up and running. This post walks through one full session, and explains what the app is deliberately not.
Why a dedicated sprint app
The built-in Workout app can run intervals, and it's free. We cover how to set that up in Apple Watch Interval Timer: How to Set One Up. What it doesn't do is know that you're sprinting a fixed distance, so it can't tell you whether this week's sprint was faster than last week's.
Sprint Game starts from that question: did I get faster? Everything else in the app exists to get you to a clean, comparable time.
A session, step by step
1. Choose your distance
You pick 500m or 1km, depending on your fitness and the space you have. Those are the only two options. A short, fixed set of distances is what makes your times comparable from one session to the next.
2. Warm-up walk
You head to your starting point while the app guides the warm-up and stretching: two rounds of two minutes each. You don't have to remember a routine or watch the clock.
3. Get ready
At your mark, the app runs a 3-2-1 countdown. You start on the cue, not on a tap you fumbled with sweaty fingers.
4. Sprint back
You run the distance back to where you started, as hard as you can hold. Nothing on the screen needs your attention while you're moving.
5. See your time
Your time shows up the moment you finish. If it's one of your three best for that distance, it goes into your personal records automatically.
What you get from it
- A repeatable protocol. The same warm-up, countdown, and distance every time, so a faster time means you got faster.
- Personal records without a spreadsheet. Your top three times for 500m and 1km, kept for you. If you currently note times in a phone app, this replaces that step.
- Your session tracked in Apple Health. The first time you open the app, it asks for permission to use Apple Health. Once you allow it, each sprint session is tracked as a workout, so it sits in Health alongside the rest of your training.
- No subscription. The app is a one-time purchase, not a monthly fee.
What it isn't
It isn't a training plan, a coach, or a general running tracker. It doesn't count steps, calories, or total distance across a week. If you want a platform that does all of that, other apps cover it better.
This is the basic version
What you've just read is the first version: the core loop, done properly. Choose a distance, warm up, sprint, get your time, keep your records. We'd rather ship that solid than ship it buried under features.
Once the app is up and running, we'll add more on top of it, including a number of fun extras. Early users will see them first, and they'll shape what gets built.
For how often to run these sessions, see How Many Sprint Sessions Per Week Is Optimal?. For how to record sprints with the tools you already have, see How to Track and Record Sprint Workouts on Apple Watch. For how Sprint Game compares to other options, see Best Apple Watch Apps for Runners (2026).
If you're new to high-intensity exercise, returning after a break, injured, or managing a health condition, check with a qualified clinician or coach before starting sprint training.
