Tracking sprint workouts on Apple Watch is more useful than most people realize, and more limited than it should be out of the box. The built-in tools get you part of the way there. With the right setup, you can capture the metrics that actually tell you whether your sprint training is working.
Here's what to track, what the native Workout app does well, where it falls short for sprints specifically, and how to fill the gaps.
What metrics matter for sprint workouts
Sprint training is different from steady-state running. A single logged "Outdoor Run" session doesn't capture what you actually did. The metrics that matter for sprint training are:
Sprint times. How long did each effort take? More specifically, how fast are your 500m and 1km bests improving over weeks? These numbers tell you directly whether your speed is developing.
Heart rate recovery. How quickly does your heart rate drop between sprint efforts? This is one of the clearest signals of cardiovascular fitness improving. A heart rate that recovers 30 beats in 45 seconds instead of 90 seconds means your body is adapting.
Resting heart rate trend. Check this first thing each morning via your Apple Watch. A consistent downward trend over six to eight weeks of sprint training is concrete proof the work is paying off.
Effort consistency. Were your later intervals as fast as your early ones? Big drop-offs in lap times mean you started too hard or recovered too little between efforts.
The built-in Apple Watch Workout app captures some of this. Not all of it.
What the native Workout app does (and doesn't do)
The Apple Watch Workout app is built for continuous activity. Select "Outdoor Run" and it tracks distance, pace, heart rate, calories, and route. That works well for a training run.
For sprint intervals, it's a blunt instrument.
You can use the built-in interval feature (available in the Workout app under "Custom Workout") to set up timed sprint and rest segments. It works, but there are real gaps:
No per-sprint time tracking. The Workout app doesn't log your individual sprint lap times in a way that's easy to review and compare across sessions. You can manually split laps, but the data is buried in the Health app and not surfaced as a sprint performance history.
No personal records for sprint distances. Apple Watch tracks running pace and total distance records, but not your fastest 500m or 1km sprint in a structured interval session.
No guided warm-up. You have to manually start and stop workout phases. The app doesn't cue you to walk for the first eight minutes or alert you when the warm-up is done.
Manual recovery timing. Without a dedicated sprint app, you're counting rest intervals yourself, watching your watch face, or setting separate timers. Manageable, but it adds friction and takes attention away from form and effort.
For casual use this is fine. For anyone training seriously, tracking sprint workouts on Apple Watch this way makes it hard to see progress or stay disciplined about the protocol.
How to set up your Apple Watch for better sprint tracking
A few steps make a significant difference even with the native tools:
Create a custom interval workout. In the Workout app on Apple Watch, go to Add Workout, choose "Other," and build a custom structure with warm-up, repeat sprint/rest intervals, and cool-down. Set sprint intervals to 15–20 seconds and rest to 60–90 seconds. Save it as a named workout so you can reuse it each session without rebuilding.
Enable automatic lap splits. In the Workout app settings on iPhone (Apple Watch app > Workout > Running Auto Pause and Segments), you can configure lap alerts. For sprint training, manual lap taps at the start of each sprint give you cleaner per-interval data than distance-based auto-splits.
Check Heart Rate recovery in the Health app. After each session, open the Heart Rate section of the Health app and look at the post-workout recovery curve. Over weeks, you'll see the rate of decline steepen as your cardiovascular fitness improves.
Log resting heart rate every morning. The Apple Watch measures this automatically during sleep and overnight rest. Check the trend in the Heart Rate section of the Health app, not just the daily reading.
This setup works, but it requires more manual effort than it should and still doesn't solve the personal best tracking problem.
Tracking sprint personal bests automatically
The most motivating metric in sprint training is watching your best times drop. Knowing that you ran a 500m in 2:04 in week two and 1:51 in week eight is concrete proof that the training is working.
